Isuzu Trooper 3.0 TD 4JX1 2004 - How does the fuel system work? #
Posted by Steve Gittins on March 25, 2010, 12:49 pm
Year of Manufacture *: 2004 Engine Code or CC *: 4JX1
Have a 2004 Isuzu Trooper 3.0 TD in that wont start. Eng code seems to be 4JX1.
Does anyone have any info that I can have a read through explaining how the fuel system works? Im aware that Oil pressure from a separate oil pump/pickup is used to assist injector opening and the correct viscosity oil is important (Which it has). Before I go digging in too deep I'd like to have a reasonable idea of the system, what influences it and how it functions.
The last time we had one I checked fuel supply, made sure the oil pickup was intact on advise from another garage, then due to lack of understanding/com's/information sent it to Isuzu. I think it was found to be a faulty IMV. This time I'd prefer to gain some understanding of the system if possible.
Cheers. Steve.

Hi Steve have you a fax no as i have some info on these beasts that i will dig out !.One of the most common problems is injector loom and oil pressure switch that sits in the oil common rail as well as the IMV valve .These engines are an absolute money gobbler ring the dealers to see if has had its modified injectors seals turbo pick up pipes etc the list is endless. the injectors are operated by oil under very high pressure nearly 5000psi !! it may be worth removing the imv valve from the rear of high pressure pump and check the end for dirt stuck in valve but the dealers will just throw money at these untill they run so be warned !! Hi Steve, What seems to be the problem ?.If it cranks but not starting, oil stainer issue as you mention is checked by adding 2 lts of oil from max line, if it starts the strainer has split. The next thing is the injector wiring from the head are all the same colour, but Loom side there is a wire in the centre which started life yellow ,but is probably now white( high pressure oil rail sensor signal) if you cut it the E.C.U. reads the open circuit as full rail pressure. It would then start, but would be gutless unless you drive it once engine is warm, switch off, then ign.on and bump start it in motion and power comes back. The cheapest sensor is through Vauxhall not isuzu at about £72.00.I can give you part number if req.The multi plugs are probably full of oil ,New engine side harness is £104 from isuzu(cheaper than Vauxhall). There is loads of info on www.itoc.co.uk. It is free and there is a guy on there called Eithan who works at a Dealer who knows these like the back of his hand. The importers( International Motors) are still supporting issues from 10 years ago. There was an injector issue late last year and providing the vehicle is in the injector batch number they are still changing them F.O.C. and that is a good time to supply sensor and harness as the dealer will fit them F.O.C.whilst doing the injectors. You can check with any dealer or I.M. that all recalls from 1998 have been done and if not they will sort.
