VW Jetta 1.9 PD 2006 - Loses electrical power to engine #

Year of Manufacture *: 2006 Engine Code or CC *: 1900 PD ( Optional ) Scanner Used: KTS
Toweed in by AA as non start after car cut out while driving alaong. Attempted to start but only clicking when trying and dash lights on for a period after turning off key. Recharged battery over night and started ok next day with various MILs on on dash. Read fault memories and had countless faults in most systems relating to power supply faults. Tried again today and started ok with MILs now off (not previously cleared). After a few starts the dash failed to illuminate and no attempt to start but still ignition controlled power to indicators, lights etc. Appears to be losing either a main earth of main positive feed. Any common areas to check first? Thanks.

Just a thought, I've had the Audi A2 with a high resistance on the earth stud that goes into the gearbox. Had to remove the battery - engine earth and remove and clean the stud mounting faces.
Volt drop testing the engine earth would confirm this as the problem.
