Peugeot 406 HDi RHY 2000 - Cutting out, poor running - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000
Engine Code or CC *: RHY
( Optional ) ECU Type: Bosch EDC15C2
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Launch

Car presented cutting out,occasional not starting. fault codes present:

Intermittent fault. fuel pressure regulator short circuit, open or short circuit to earth.

Intermittent fault. high pressure diesel monitoring, maximum pressure exceeded

Intermittent fault. high pressure diesel regulator blocked

When not starting live data showed
engine speed 160rpm
fuel pressure 31 bar
fuel pressure regulator 4%

After looking through archives I opened up fuel filter to reveal copper coloured fileings. I also removed drv, but couldn't see any particals on tip, cleaned, and refitted. Low pressure pump pressure is 2.5 bar.

After trying car again cutting out returned after 2 mins. while looking at live data fuel pressure would shoot up to over 1000 bar before cutting out.

After doing this for 10 mins the car suddenly started to run right...

Now I know I haven't fixed it, and I dont want the customer to have it back until its right, but I could do with some sugestions of what to try next...

Current live readings are
Engine speed 835
fuel pressure 298bar
pressure regulator 16%

Engine speed 3019
fuel pressure 462bar
pressure regulator 23%

All fault codes have cleared, and car runs well on road test.

Hi Nigel, how many miles has engine done? What sort of quantity of filings in filter housing, as all the Peugeot HDI's semm to have a little .. .. i.e. 10 - 20 of them.
Possible sticky IMV ??.

Car has done 85,000 miles, I would describe the filings as a dusting, ie. enough to cover the bottom of the bowl with a very thin layer, and they were very fine

Had alot of trouble with high pressure pump in tank. Will bring up feul pressure sensor problems,pump appears to be working ok but have found if replaced clear faults car is ok. Darren

Hi Nigel, WOW .. .. In my experience that is loads mate. I HIGHLY suspect low pressure pump breaking up with tranference of particles into high pressure pump.

since the problem seams to be excess high fuel pressure, How does the system control the fuel pressure?
the answer ties in with the fault code you found.
test the component as per test program and work forward. HTH

Sure you will find this in the archives, maybe not on this exact 406 but most HDI variants are the same.

Your code descriptions and live data all fit with faulty/dirty fuel pressure regulator or wireing to same.

Wouldn't worry about the fine particles in filter bowl, never seen one without. Isn't that what a filter is for? If it had flakes of metal HP pump would be poorly and unable to provide 1000bar, stuck pressure reg though.....

Hi
The fuel pressure exceeded code is your pointer.
The car will require a new pressure regulator on rear of pump.
remove it and inspect shaft,it will be pitted causing a sticking mechanical issue.
The ecu is trying to earth pulse control the valve and the shaft is sticking causing a high pressure issue so the ecu,s strategy is to shut down due to excessive pressure at the wrong time.

Change 2 or 3 a month!

Hi Simon, you are on the money as to the component, but not as to the operation.
You can not see any "moving" parts.
The "pitting" you talk about is probably the 5 micron filter on the end of the nose.

Hi chaps, I have been reliably informed that I am getting my sytems mixed up.

I was going along the route of the rubbish from the low pressure pump causing the IMV to stick, that in turn allowing excess pressure to build.
There is no IMV on your year vehicle, pressure is controled by the DRV.
I still feel there is more metal in your housing than I would like to see and 'I' would advise customer of a possible upcoming replacement.

Car started fine this morning, so decided to perform wiggle test on wireing.

Cuts out when loom around front of engine disturbed. This is now my current angle of attack..

Thanks to everyone who contributed, especially Mark for focusing my mind.

Fault was wire for fuel pressure sender had rubbed through on bracket above timing belt cover.
