Vauxhall Astra 1.7 CDTi Z17DTL 2005 - Alternator fault, not charging and light on #

Hello,
I have got a customer with an Astra with typical alternator type problems (i.e light on / no charging etc). I replaced the alternator and the problem seemed to go away. I have now got the customer back with exactly the same symptoms. I have plugged it into the scanner and I am getting several spirious codes. After investigating and erasing 'Code P0621' Alternator warning lamp - Circuit malfunction remains. When I start the vehicle the light comes on and goes off again as normal, but no charge going to battery. Checked for bad connections / water ingress etc, bypassed alternator return system to battery to eliminate wiring but problem still persists. If left ticking over alternator light comes on and engine cuts out. Rev counter works and light works, so I assume new alternator is ok?! If anyone has come across this before please help.

Is it genuine alternator or aftermarket?

Hi Sam. Are the Alternators Identical. ? I,E do they both have clutch pulleys or Standard Pulleys. ?

When you say that you fitted an Alternator and it appeared to cure it, How long has the new unit been fitted before the problem returned. ?

The Main way to tell the difference between the 2 types of alternator are, The Old Type -- ( usually up to about 2004 which fits the standard engine and some early common Rail versions, The Terminals should be Marked L and W. and is Usually but not always fitted with a standard pulley.

The Later Type Fitted around 2004 onwards is marked up L and F and is Usually fitted with a Clutch pulley.

If you buy a Chinese copy alternator or a Recon unit and it isn't marked up then you will struggle to see the difference.

The only way to be certain as i've found from experience is to fit a Genuine Item and be done with it. Sometimes the price difference isn't to much especially if you've got to fit it twice.

That's why I asked him on the beggining is it genuine one or aftermarket. I had this problem as well.We thought this is a ecu faulty-looks like. But I found on forum it is very sensitive and only genuine will do the job.

Hi guys,
thanks for the feed back. All i can say is the two that i have fitted look identical but still a prob, they were both new lucus units. The fault code did say line L malfunction but only after left ticking over when light comes bake on.

Hi Piotr. This Is Obviously an incorrect statement as after fitting and selling somewhere in the region of 200 late type units and possibly 1000 older type units without a problem then "Genuine" is not necessary, Its a matter of understanding that there is a difference and fitting the "Correct" Type of unit for the job. ( We have had customers that have fitted the wrong units and we have corrected their mistakes, but never caused the problem ourselves )

HI Sam. What Part no's have you got on the new lucas units and also on the original unit. ?

P.S. Most Suppliers haven't even got the correct listing for this vehicle.

I cant tell you the number for the old original unit but the lucus part number i have fitted is an LRB00487. I no that it is the old type system and not managed.

ok Tony can you give me an advise for a future : how to recognise is it the right unit fitted? I know they are a common fault so I would be very pleased if you would give me that info.
