Ford Mondeo 2.0TDCI 2002 77,000 - Smoking on acceleration - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 02 plate Engine Code or CC *: 2.0 turbo ( Optional ) Scanner Used: Hannahtech
Not looking for a diagnosis on the basis of this rather limited information, Rather conformation (or not ) that I am thinking along the right lines..
02 plate, 77,000 miles. Smokes on acceleration.
Not really heavy smoke, but definitely noticeable and likely MOT fail.
Performance is OK and no knocking noises.
No fault codes!
(No real history either, owner has only had it a couple of weeks from a private sale)
Now, the INTERESTING thing is that somebody has hand-written firing order information on the injector sticker on the cam cover.
I am suspecting knackered injectors. My reasoning is that there are no other fault codes. There does not seem to be excessive blow by (or crank-case pressure build up). the turbo hoses are OK. and the mileage is about right
The final killer is that it appears that somebody (recently) has felt it necessary to "Reset" the injector coding! (Apparently it failed its last MOT due to smoke and the garage "Did something" to get it through. Though is this is it, I do not know)
Its just a bit scary going down the £1000 solution route without knowing FOR CERTAIN that it is going to be a fix!
Especially with a customer who has only just bought the cursed thing!
(I am afraid that I advise "Private" owners to keep well away from post-2000 diesels these days. they are only really "worth" it (IMHO) if you are a commercial driver doing upwards of 30,000/year, and even then I am not certain that they are any cheaper to run than a modern petrol vehicle)
For now I have just given it a good dose of injector cleaner and am waiting to see what effect this might have!
Re: Ford Mondeo TDCI 77,000 smoking on acceleration
I would be inclined to agree with lee. if you have access to ids you can view the injector correction levels in live data, then get the numbers off the actual injectors (not sticker) and reprogram them, normaly makes them drive like a different car. (the sticker will probably be the new injector numbers of replacements at some time. (remember they are programed in firing order and not cylinder order.) sean
