Land Rover Freelander TD4 2005 - Hard starting, 15 to 20 seconds - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
Engine Code or Type *: TD4
( Optional ) Scanner Used: AD pro

Hi all

Starting from cold engine cranks for 15 to 20 seconds before starting
No fault codes present
During cranking engine tries to fire with blue/ grey smoke from exhaust
On starting engine appears to miss for a couple of seconds with blue/ grey smoke
All clears and then runs fine, no smoke
Replaced fuel pressure sensor with modified switch and wiring
No excessive leak off from injectors on cranking
All injectors leak off within 10% on idle
Low pressure ign on 3.5 bar
Low pressure cranking 3.3 bar
Fuel pressure on cranking 450 bar
Fuel pressure after start 280 bar
Max pressure 1200 bar
Pulse from injectors present when cranking
Cylinder compressions 380 to 400 psi
EGR OK
Glow circuit works OK

Any help would be much appreciated

It would be interesting to know whether your compression readings were taken with hot or cold engine.Is there any difference between hot and cold pressures that could be the cause of the fault?

Hi David

The compressions were done with cold engine to see how they were when the hard starting fault was present

Will do them hot as soon as i have time, possibly Saturday

HAve you eliminated fuel quality / contamination and considerd Cranking speed. ?

had one like this recently ,it turned out to be an injector.i used a ballbearing to seal off one injector at a time this was how i found it,when starting perfectly on three.hth dave

Hi

It would be interesting to see if Autologic comes up with faults that other scanners do not see. Quite often we see vehicles that have done the rounds & are able to retreive fault codes that others have not been able to, your problem I would sugggest is most likely to be an injector & should show up under compensations.

Where abouts in the country are you ? I will see if there is a freindly Autologic user near you.

Hello Pete,
I posted a reply on the FMN forum and had the same problem with one which didn't show any faults (using Autologic), the spill amounts were even, but the fuelling compensation for one injector was approx 2.5 mg/st. Replacing injector sorted it.

I had one of these do this, it turned out to be a faulty primary fuel pump. hth

Hi all
Thanks for replies

Not had the chance to do compression hot yet

Fuel compensations are cylinders 1 and 4 -1 and cylinders 2 and 3 +1

Fuel is OK, primary pump working

Cranking speed and battery voltage OK

I'm in Canterbury Kent

Glow plugs operate once engine has started
No glow plugs ignition on or cranking
If glow plugs are operated via scan tool vehicle starts fine but still smokes

Sorry for not posting fix but only been sorted recently as sales vehicle.

Had injectors tested and repaired and all is sorted.
