Audi A4 2.0 TDi PD 2005 - Engine seized, snapped oil pump drive chain #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
Engine Code or Type *: 2.0 TDI (PD)

Vehicle was towed in with suspect Timing belt failure, on inspection it was found to have a snapped oil pump drive chain. My question is, is this a known fault? We found nothing wrong with the oil pump and are going to replace chain sprockets and tensioner.

Been told by Audi that the oil pump (and I guess balance shaft housing) has to be changed along with chain, sprockets, timing belt etc, etc. Parts bill alone is nearing £1000. Does anybody have any faith in the modern motor car (especially diesels)????

Hi Mark,this is a known fault with the A4 2.0 PD,There has been reports of low mileage vehicles destroying engines and turbos due to the chain/tensioner failure at 20k!!! We have done one with a noisy chain,although there is a recall Audi will tell you that your vehicle is out with the spec.

Thanks Graham,

We've been sold a conversion to gear drive kit by Audi, but we're having a hell of a time getting the timing sprocket of the crank, plus getting all the parts is becoming a nightmare!

Hi Mark,
Just been reading about the problem you had with A4 2.0TDi PD with snapped oil pump drive.
We have the same problem, especially in getting the drive cog off the crank,used so much heat that no.1 main bearing journal is turning blue,at the same time using hydraulic pullers,any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mark, David - what is the engine code on the 2 x A4's you're dealing with?
I can take a look on Erwin if you like to see how Audi advise doing the job.

is it BLB? You might find after lucky repair it need a new turbo as well.
