Ford Fiesta TDCI 1.4 2004 - Poor performance after changing leak off pipes - Fixed #

Lost the edge of performance after changing leak off pipes, gone back through job checking manifold etc, no fault codes, live data makes sense, cheked turbo boost, valve timing, exhaust restriction, had injectors tested (OK). Thinking about having the ECU re-flashed. Any suggestion please???

Couldn't get any sense trying to book the car into our local Ford dealer, had the vehicle into our Bosch diesel centre and they don't know what's wrong with it. Car drives great on the flat allthough acceleration is pathetic! Vehicle is perfect in all other respects, it feels like turbo boost issues. Turbo get up to 1 bar but only with the engine revs close to max, so i'm biting the bullet and trying a new turbo. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated it's costing me a fortune.

Are you sure it's not the injectors themselves? If you check some of the other Fiesta TDCi posts, they mention injector issues, especially, when they've been removed, with no apparent issues.

Thanks for the response, we had the injectors tested at our local Bosch diesel centre, although they said they had some issues with testing delphi injectors (a lot of leak back,)we checked leak back and found no problem. However I will get them rechecked somwhere else as I am just lost for ideas! I've just tried a new turbo as that's what it feels like no boost, but no difference was made. Any idea why removing injectors would cause this? Car run fine otherwise, no smoke, starts well, runs well on the flat. It;s a real mystery and we are concerned about working on any more till we resolve this case.

Yes,injectors were put back in their respective ports, allthough i've been informed that they are not coded.

Hi Mark, just read about your problem, had a problem like this on a 03 fiesta 1.4 tdci a year ago, ok on flat lacked power on hills & could stall car if not enough revs given. Found problen with Camshaft as cam lobs are pressed onto the shaft & set at correct angles to open valves at correct times, the problem cames when the lobs move then altering the valve liftcauseing the lack of power under load. I fitted a new camshaft & full power was regained. I hope this helps.

Sounds feasible, It felt like valve timing was out hence we cheked valve timing and keyways but not actual valve position, got the car back in on thursday so I'll check it

and let you know how it pans out.

Hi Mark Just had exactly the same experience with a 1400 TDCI, came in with compression blowby on injector copper washers, No 2 siezed in head and the plastic seal at top of the injector had melted, was running fine just blowing past injector, removed injectors,( No`s 2 and 3 with difficulty) cleaned up refitted with new washers. leakoff pipes and manifold seals started and idled fine, sweet as a nut just absolutely no power, would stall just getting out of the workshop, rechecked everything as you have, checked live data ok,ended up with new set of injectors and all is well (or if you are James Dillon happy days!)
I`ve changed hundreds of injectors in my time, (common rail included) never had a problem like this, seems to be a common problem on these engines, probably a good idea to advise customer of the possible need for a new set of injectors when taking this job on again, (or running a mile from it!)

Hi Mark we have had exactly the same problem as yourself, changed injector seals and leak off rail, flat as a fart on road test, stripped down again to find out if there was any human error, everything ok eventual cure was new injectors dont know why but this cured the problem, we have done quite a few prior to this one with no problems, as Roger states in future we will advise customers of this problem.

We have had this a few times now. Always fit four, just throw the old ones away, don't even attempt to get them repaired. The last one we did had only 8,000 on the clock. Also they DO need programming. Codes can be found on injector or top of engine.

Sorry to contradict keith, but the injectors dont need coding, fit new injectors & rebuild no problems. ( the ones we did were siemens )

Roger are we talking about the PSA Engines. I have not done one yet that do not need coding. I have found that they need recoding even if you take them out and put them back to there original places.

16v do need coded (delphi) 8v valve dont (siemens)

Hmm i thought the last 16v i looked at had Bosh injectors?

My humble appologies i am on the earlier 8 valve model, but i think the only cure for Marks problem is a set of injectors, sorry once more only trying to help.

Hi guys, sorry for the slow response,

New injectors cured the problem and they didn't need coding (8v siemens). I had the old injectors tested at a diesel center in Swansea (LLandore Battery Centre) The guy down there is worth a plug very helpful and free with info.
He said these injectors are a pain in the a**, just introducing air into the system can cause them to go on the blink, such as fuel filter changes. With a set of injector near £500 they are always going to be scary to work on. As has already been said, inform your customers before carrying out any work on the fuel system.
