Modern Diesels-system operation and diagnosis #Archived Message

Now, I am a mobile, so I do not anticipate being in a position to reliably dismantle modern high pressure fuel systems (I don't believe I would ever be able to keep things clean enough working outside)
As a consequence I have tended to avoid all but the most straightforward repairs (Lift pumps, routine servicing etc) on the more modern diesel systems
Howwever I would like to be in a position to give a better preliminary diagnosis when customers present with running problems before sending them elsewhere.
What I am looking for is advise on good books on operation, testing and diagnosis.
And also, any sugestions on what additional tools/test gear might be useful.
But, bear in mind, this is more about satisfying professional curiosity and giving useful advise rather than being in a position to do major repairs. so I am not anticipating spending large amounts on equipment that I will never really have a realistic possibility of deriving profitable work from.
