Thank you for that wonderful piece of 20/20 hindsight Ian . I know now that I should have marked the belt and pulleys but thought that by the time the pump had been cleaned all the marks would have come off the pump anyway, I suppose I could have put a punch mark on though. Anyway fitted pump to nearest tooth only to be too far advanced, so I adjusted back on slots on pulley. Having done this decided I was a tooth out, reset the belt and started adjusting forward on the slots only to come back to my original marks for the slotted pulley. The reason for posting all this is that I found out the hard way that the VCDS TDi Timing checker does not tell you that the timing is too far retarded to diplay in the window, all I kept getting is the "please wait until timing is fully retarded" message, had to adjust forward by guesswork until the injection events came in the window. It just took too long for for me to work out what was happening. A message "too far retarded to display" would have saved me a lot of time. Hopefully this may save others from falling into the trap I did. Anyway, car back together and back to customer running fine. Before others criticise me for making a long winded job of it, it was my first time and I prefer to make haste slowly and not wreck the customers car. I could have passed the job on to a diesel specialist but have found to my cost that everytime I use outside resources they seem to make a pigs ear of it and I could have done better myself! Shaun.
