After extensive testing I resorted to using a colleague's AUTOCOM to probe this problem as this kit offers parallel testing and scoping pin by pin. I was pleasantly surprised to get an almost instant result pointing to the ENGINE SPEED SENSOR - no output, Scoped it and got a terrible trace, but the engine started and ran (very roughly @ max adv) I had previously fitted an OE sensor, a pattern sensor and a sensor off an identical running AHF engine, in each case all sensors worked fine on the other engine but not on the original. I then obtained an intermotor sensor, fitted it and the functions were all restored and the A3 has been in regular use for some months with no problems .... until recently when the vehicle started losing power. AUTOCOM to the rescue again ! .... Same problem as before - NO engine speed signal ... scoped and found to be erratic, dirty and inconsistent. tried another new sensor ... NO CHANGE. I appear to have an air-gap between the sensor tip and the internal rotor of approx 4mm (seems a bit too much). Customer SOLD the car on Ebay last week @ a considerable loss ! and I'm dissapointed to have been unable to resolve the issue. I hope this saga may be of use to someone in the future. StuW
