Navarra 2.5D D22, first used 2002 in Ireland, registered in UK in May 2004, 49500 miles.
Hi all, This goes back 3 years, local customer's car was towed in after rattling and then complete silence.
We investigated a bit - cam chain, tensioner, sprockets etc. damaged - but as it was still under a used car warranty it was taken back to the local seller (well respected used 4x4 dealer, not a Nissan dealer). We did some background checking and eventually found it was quite a known and common problem and that there had been recalls as the brake vacuum pump is driven directly (bolted to timing chest - not belt) and it was seen as a safety issue if the engine stopped !?! Engine is also used in X-Trails etc.
We felt that it should have been fixed free at a Nissan dealer and Nissan agreed at minimum to supply all the parts but by this time the seller had it in bits and the repair underway. We continued to advise the lucky owner that with continued pressure Nissan would repair it. It dragged on a bit and the dealer didn't pursue Nissan. Eventually the dealer did the labour free and customer paid around £1000 for parts inc. valves, piston etc. It has been ok since.
As usual in these cases it took a fair bit to get any admission of the problem from Nissan or the local Nissan dealers. "That's the first one we've heard of!" was the usual and repeated response! (Same as when the oil pumps used to fall off LR TD5s.)
Haven't heard about problems since then though we have a couple of other customers with them.
    Good luck.
    Peter
