When I was at the Mechanex show at Harrogate last year I think it was LUK doing a small talk about DM Clutches and they were of the opinion that changing to solid flywheels should NOT be carried out as you will soon end up with gearbox problems because the boxes can not stand the quick bursts of very high torque that is produced from modern HDI's etc on each firing stroke. They stress that the springs are not just for smoothing out the torque on clutch takeup on seting off but are there to smooth out each of the "pulses of power" when running under load.
