Another suggestion (if still available) is to buy the Bosch yellow books on diesel systems for about £20 I think. They do a specific common rail diesel book which breaks down each section of the system and explains in some detail how it functions.

They maybe refered to as the bosch yellow jacket books. I have two diesel books both ofwhich I still refer to.

They don't go into testing details though.
