They COULD be used for all or any of the following.
1) cold start, pre-crank, crank & post start.
2) Hot start & post hot start(to reduce emissions and reduce engine noise)
3) over-run to maintain exhaust temp for two way cat.
4) Along with post injection of fuel for Cat warm up and DPF re-gen.
5) power shedding.
