Hi Alan
I had basically the same problem as you with a 2.4 2007 Transit, on first appearance it looked like a faulty ECU but ended up being the plug that connects the ECU. We had to replace the engine loom to cure it, we have also come across this with a Ford Focus. We found the problem by wiggling the ECU connectors when in a non start situation and also noticed that after testing via probing the wires on the ECU it would start.
