After a lot of head scratching opened up the lume at the front of the engine where it branches into four and found that two wires had chafed through their insulation on the inside of the plastic trunking,one from the egr and one from the valve that operates the intake flap.I think they probably touch together momentarily when the engine cranks, hence the code being set almost always on startup.Thanks to all who replied.
