Thanks, The fuel that is in the car looks and feels like diesel, but not the diesel that I use.

(I use BP Supreme, it really does seem to work better,) this sainsburys diesel feels thinner and less oily for want of a better description but not like it would be if it had petroll in it )

The EGR had occurred to me last night as a possiblility. especially since we have the sometimes it does sometimes it doesnt aspect. I will check that next.

I am still puzzled by the strange smell however If it was fuel contamination there would be broken down cars all over the Farnham Bypass and there are not so I think this is unlikly!
