Hi,
I had one of these (not dpf though) and as Kevin says the wastegate is operated by pressure from the inlet.
I verified my problem by teeing in a boost gauge to the pipe that goes to the wastegate from the inlet tract. Taped it to the windscreen and watched pressure on gauge while driving.
I managed to free off sticking rod and its been fine since.
