I agree with all that Kev says about caps.
In the meantime autodata says "24 engine control module (ECM)/ immobiliser control module-wiring open/short circuit". This info not specifically for this vehicle though (323,626, Xedos, MX-3, MX-5) but I would think its probably the same over the range.
Have you got comms with the engine ECU? Does it also say it has problems talking back to the immo? Because if the Engine ECU is not awake then the immo will not have comms with it of course.
