hi steve might be worth checking the immobilizer to see if there are any comms faults with regards to comms with engine ecu also check within the dash for same faults
im only sating this because i had a problem with a golf intermittent non start and that was the ecu relay at fault would also check the multi plugs within the electrics box for corrosion
