As usual it was "back to basics" and turned out to be a worn through fuel pipe. In my defence it came in working fine and because the leak off was high that was why I sent the injectors away. Mark, my next step was going to be checking the fuel line vacuum (honest )and it became apparent only after moving the pipes. With regard to whether it had a pump in the tank I just looked at the wires in the multi plug underneath, duh!!
After many too many years as a diesel fitter it shows how things have changed. Without exception I would have checked the fuel lines first on the old mechanical systems with this kind of problem.
