Regarding the harness, this can be cut apart when taking out and when installing new one, heat gently with heat gun and it will become flexible enough to install in situ.
However I would be surprised if the harness solves your problem, most of the time when failed you will have a fault code.
On pd engines when there is no code but an observed misfire I would look at the fuel end of things, filter, priming pump, tandem pump pressure, also would be worth checking intake flap to ensure its not sticking.
