Kia Sedona 2.9 CRDi 2003 - Loss of power - Fixed #

Car brought in for lack of power, suspected turbo fault.
I took this for a drive with multiscan connected, drove fine for first mile then as I got on to motorway it lost power, had to limp it off the motorway at idle on the hard shoulder.
It would start and idle fine, but no response from acc. pedal at all. just by chance I noticed the radiator fan on but no hot air coming from it, turns out, next to no coolant in there, temperature gauge showed three quarters, so for protection when it gets this hot it cuts the power and doesn't log any fault codes. Filled up with coolant and fault fixed.
I have had a couple of these around that year. Both had coolant leaks from rotted heater pipes under centre of vehicle. I have cut the pipes and just looped a piece of hose between the two

I've had this exact same fault on a 2006 Honda 2.2cdti. IIRC, the temp gauge was around the 3/4 area, but live data showed it very high. Coolant level was low due to a slight crack in the header tank.
I wonder how many other manufacturer's employ this strategy?
