Fiat Punto 1.3 2001 - EPS repair - Fixed #

Had one of these in today with failed power steering, due to financial restraints customer asked if I would attempt a repair, rather than replacement of steering column.

Following Simon Forseys excellent instructions, here EPS repair the job turned out to be very easy.

Here is the motor removed from the column, (3 torx bolts accessable from the fusebox area)

The 6 wires at the bottom have to be unsoldered, remove the 4 torx screws and remove the circuit board and turn over.

The dry soldered joints could be easily seen (left side of picture). A simple re-soldering repair and reassembly followed, and all was well.

The hardest part of the job was reattaching the 6 wires, as they are particularly 'hairy', and the contacts are quite small.

Hope this adds to this topic;
When resoldering these relays (and in many other cases of dry joints on relays) always resolder the coil connections as well, these are the two small ones either side of the single large one on the picture shown for the less electronic amongst us. Due to thermal stress they can develop a hairline crack that is not obvious to see unless a good magnifier is used. I repaired one of these units about 18 months ago and the power connections were fine, it was the coil connections giving trouble.
When resoldering any connection of this type, particularly where the joint has started to burn and fill with oxides use a "solder sucker" to remove the old dross first and replace all the solder with fresh. I add some solder to the dry joint to get it to flow, then suck the joint free of solder and then resolder with fresh solder. Failure to do this and the joint is likely to fail again very quickly. Solder suckers are easily available from Maplin, RS Components, CPC Components etc. for very little money.

I have a couple of solder suckers, but find solder "wick" much easier.

Hi Kev,
Each to his own on this one I think. "Wickers" say that solder suckers lift the tracks, but in my experience solder wick does it even more, down to the skill (and preference) of the user in the end.
But then again you can empty the solder sucker and use it again, try that with wick

.
Either way, a good joint is a clean joint, especially in the preparation.

We have repaired dozens of these EPS motors and most have been OK but the Relays are now starting to fail on the older models due to burnt relay contacts, so after having a couple of failures, We Have now decided that Every repair will inculde 2 x New relay's, I couldn't find the Exact Relays in the UK So i bought some from Italy.

Am I right in thinking this is the same motor unit as fitted to a 2006 panda. I have one that the customer cant afford a new motor for that makes some stange noises and when the city button is pressed it attempts to turn its self to left hand lock! Is this fix purely for failed motors or is it likely to be worth a try on the car in question?

Andrew, I tried a repair on one of these pandas a while ago, the motor is different and can't be done. It will probably be a fault with the torque sensor so will need a new unit, easy enough job but you do need a decent scan tool to reset the sensor calibration.
