On this Polo, I had to do the following as a list-
Remove rear seat base and backrest
Remove all the trim surrounding the NSR door, B pillar, sill trims,C pillar trims, remove rubber door seal from bottom half of door,
Spend about an hour trying to pry door card off without destroying it !, including use of crowbars, it is impossible to get prybars into the gap that is left,
Get violent with it and break the "door card fixings", the only way to get purchase on the door card is at the lower front Nearside corner, at the bottom of the B post, once a couple of fixings have broken or released, you can then get two hands on the doorcard and rip it off, sorry, remove gently,
Try and remove inner door panel, that horrible thing that incorporates the window regulator, think to yourself "who designed that plastic dowel that holds the window to the regulator", as you try and gently push that dowel through, no chance, have to knock the inner expansion bush through with a punch and hammer, and the same with the big dowel, then, try and use gaffer tape on a wet window and bodywork to hold the door glass up,
Next, You can finally see the motor/latch assembly, looking at new one you think you can work out how to release, practice on new latch and can get it to release, try on still locked door, does not work, what you cannot see is that when the electric motor locks the latch it also uses a plastic link within the motor to stop theft, and you cannot access that part of release mechanism,
Yes you can after knocking hell out of the electric motor with an air chisel !!, by destroying the lock motor you can see the mechanical parts of the lock and can trip the release lever,
I was determined to do this with minimum amount of damage and got there in the end but what a nightmare !!, only damage was a few scratches to door frame, luckily customer turned up as I was getting to final stage and appreciates the amount of work in "just getting a door open", I will post this in fixed and gone, but best part of three hours on that
