GROVE — The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe declined to release information Monday on the allegation that members of the Claims Committee received an overpayment of $35,000 each.
The tribe's general council discussed the overpayment and two other issues Saturday, said Logan Line, the tribe's public relations director.
Any actions or results of that meeting can't be released to the public because the recordings of the general council's actions haven't been transcribed, he said.
Also, transcriptions will need to be approved for publication, he said.
The eight-page report, dated Jan. 11 and prepared by Mense, Churchwell & Mense, P.C., of Joplin, Mo., shows that the committee's members were entitled to an annual stipend of $24,000 but that each received $59,000.
The report doesn't say how many members were overpaid. Line said the tribe did not authorize the release of the report and could not comment on the allegation.
The report states that the Claims Committee's members are not tribal employees.
The tribe's Web site identifies Sallie Leaf as the committee's chairwoman; Lenora Sparks as its treasurer; Rhonda Birdsong as its secretary; Paul Barton as a first committee member; and Sally Whitecrow-Ollis as a second committee member.
Line said each claims committee member is paid $2,000 a month.
The report says the committee oversees the distribution of the education, social services and elder funds.
The report recommends that the claims committee disburse stipends in accordance with the general council resolutions and that the general council should approve any changes in stipend allowances before disbursements are made.
The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe has tribal land in Delaware and Ottawa counties with offices in Grove and Miami.
Web sites show the tribe has about 3,600 members.
