Rod, this is a transfer-printed box which would have held tooth brushes, straight razor, etc. It appears to be printed in a mode called both polychrome and Prattware, where (usually) four colors are printed from four engraved plates, one plate for each color. I found the right hand pattern as part of an item shown in Mortimer2003, page 234, entry 713. Mayer was one of the makers who produced these items, and the date 1851 "Prize Medal" is a bit of advertising, indicating that Mayer won some sort of prize in their exhibition at the 1851 Grand International Exhibition in London, where the principal building as the so-called "Crystal Palace". So this piece likely was produced soon after 1851. We'd like to use your images in our database. Would this be OK?
