I was at a local antique mall in central Florida, and saw an older couple with a gorgeous blue and white soup tureen at the counter. I complimented their great find, but it turns out they hadn't bought it, they were trying to sell it. And the antique dealer didn't want it because of a small chip and hairline fracture on the lid. I bought it to gift to my sister, who collects blue and white transferwear. The sellers said it was 200 years old. It came with the soup tureen, lid and matching ladle.
I have taken pictures and started doing my own research online, using the pattern and Makers mark.
The mark says "Swiss Scenery" Opaque China, with JS above it. It matches marks here for Joseph Stubbs. And Mr. Stubbs has 7 Swiss Scenery patterns listed here, that I found, but none match the excat pattern of my soup tureen. So I'm assuming this is an 8th version of that pattern?
I am happy to provide more pictures or answer any questions.
I would love any input from those on the forum who know this better than me.
Is this Joseph Stubbs, and another version of his Swiss Scenery items?
Anything else you may know, or places to keep researching? Any and all help is welcome!
Re: Joseph Stubbs Swiss Scenery Soup Tureen & Ladle
Wow, talk about being in the right place at the right time! Beautiful tureen and ladle. Even with the damage I wouldn't have left it behind either. Yes, you're right on the money, Swiss Scenery by Joseph Stubbs. Same mark and border. Since these types of transferware patterns typically had a different engraving for each piece in the service it's no surprise this particular scene isn't in the database yet. Do you have measurements? We'd love to add this to what we already have. Thanks so much for sharing it!
