Copeland Late Spode Greek, undocumented central panel Posted by Kate Kerin on May 16, 2024, 7:12 pm I am looking for information on this large-scale platter. I checked the regular sources, from this website to the Stoke-on-Trent archives and have not been able to find other pieces with this central panel. If anyone has seen this particular image on the Greek pattern and can share any details, or can help me with the correct name for this colorway, I would be most grateful. I realize that based on the impressed mark, Copeland Spode Imperial, used between 1935 and 1952, this piece is well outside of your group’s standard range of focus, but I do not know who else might help me with this obscure variation on the Greek pattern. I also ask you to forgive me if I do not use the correct terms to describe aspects of this piece. Thank you for any assistance you might offer.

I looked in Nicholas Moore's "Spode Greek" and didn't find this image there either, though there were some of the Greek patterns with the same red and black coloring. Search in Google Images for "The Horses of the Morning" by Flaxman and you will see this same image (with accompanying figures) which either pictures Aurora, or Eos, Goddess of Dawn, or her sister Selene, Goddess of the Moon (the sources were a little unclear). But this image was by William Flaxman, the same artist on whose prints the rest of the Greek series was based.

I found the Flaxman reference but did not know that he did the other images used for the Greek pattern. I have a facsimile of the Hamilton book and didn’t see this image there (yet!). It is great to understand that there is a link. Is red and black the correct name for this colorway? It is decidedly red on the rim but the interior bits look more orange/terracotta. Again, thank you for helping this curious novice.
