Walter on April 26, 2024, 8:42 pm Hi, I had always read that cup plates were used to put the teacup in so that slopped tea wouldn't stain linens or damage wooden tabletops. I recently read "a Victorian lady ...is sipping her tea from a cup plate of that era." The older saucers were deep and could hold liquid, so then the cup would be placed on a cup plate while someone sipped from the saucer. A cup plate could never hold tea, too small and flat.
