OMG.....I stumbled across your facebook page and I am absolutely addicted to transferware. I inherited several pieces of brown, black, multiple blue, and a few flo blue. My question is can someone please explain flo blue, vs transferware vs toile.....Maybe I don't really have transferware. I have a whole collection of Liberty Blue and then the same thing in Red...I am not sure if it is old enough to be considered transferware. I am going to look into membership in order to see if I can find additions to my collection. I also have two black transferware plates that have a floral back mark with the word VIRGINIA inscribed. Being a beginner I know most transferware came from England, but was there American made dishes too? Ok.....going to look up how to join!

Hi Kathy. Welcome to the club! It sounds like everything you have is transferware, which encompasses anything printed on pottery or porcelain in which the design is "transferred" from an inked tissue or bat (that's confusing for a beginner I know). Flow blue is transferware, so is toile, so is Liberty Blue though of course that's 20th century and not covered by the database. Transferware has been made all over Europe and in America too but it was an English invention and the British stuff is still generally the most highly valued. Obviously we're all addicted to the stuff too, you're in good company!
