Hi again Cate. You sent me down a bit of rabbit hole with this question. The database has this series of patterns as maker unknown. However "Beauties" #01 has maker initials of J.B. It was still left as maker unknown since those initials could have related to either James Beech or James Broadhurst. In my opinion James Broadhurst is very unlikely, as he did not start potting till 1847, five years after the Copyright Act of 1842 made the pirating of book illustrations for transferware designs, as was the case with this series, illegal. No doubt some potters may have flouted the law but probably a whole series of patterns like this one would not have escaped notice for very long. Plus James Beech always seems to have used the JB initials under the pattern mark (see Texian Campaigne patterns for one example). More research would be needed before a sure attribution could be made but in my mind James Beech is the only logical choice. Thanks for your question!
