Hi again Jo. You raise some interesting questions. Wish I had some interesting answers! As you say, by now it is almost impossible to know who the original owners of these transferware pieces would have been. As you probably know, Wood's Irregular Shell Border series comprises about 35 different views, mostly English, some American, a couple of views of India, the three African views and several that have never been identified. They all have a maritime theme. The consensus is that these dark blue transferware pieces were mostly intended for export to America. Whether once here they were bought by people who either had connections to the slave trade or, perhaps were abolitionists - yeah, who can say. Certainly some may have been but these pieces, which comprise a complete dinner service, would have been on sale to the general public. And why the Enoch Wood factory should have chosen these views rather than any others is another good question that may never have an answer. It could be asked about a lot of the transferware series produced by various potters. Sorry I couldn't be more help but thanks for an intriguing line of inquiry. Len
