Some manufacturers made white ironstone, and those had black printed maker's marks. I have a willow flat, oval bowl in ironstone by W. & E. Corn, in business c. 1864-1894 in Burslem. It has a typical Royal Arms mark printed in black that is like the marks put on white ironstone. My guess is that the blue willow pattern was put on a piece of white ironstone that had been intended to be fired undecorated. However, I don't know for sure.
