Re: Burning Building Cup Plate
Debra, a lovely plate! This would have been an excellent opportunity for you to search the TCC Database, because in doing so you would have (almost) found your plate. I searched using "fire" as the general search term, finding 70 patterns with the word "fire" in their description. Trolling the patterns, one finds "View from Coenties Slip" aka "Great Fire of the City of New York" and "Burning of Coenties Slip". The New York Great fire occurred in 1836, and we have three plates from the same series in the DB. Now, interestingly, your cup plate has a different border, and the actual pattern differs slightly from the DB example, but the source print is definitely the same. So either the maker of the three larger plates (Thomas Dimmock & Co.) used a different transfer and border on this much smaller cup plate, or else it was made by another maker using the same source print. The Dimmock plates have a nice mark on the reverse; does yours? If so, please post it to the message board. I defer to others much more knowledgeable to further elucidate, and it will help if they know that there is or is not a mark, and if so, what it looks like.
