Re: household of mixed patterns
Using a variety of patterns in one household was not unusual. If you check merchants' ads & orders, you'll see that any piece of a dinner, tea, or toilet set could be purchased individually. I recently inventoried the transferware descending through the family at the Black house in Ellsworth, ME. & found many different patterns, some obviously remnants of sets but others a single example. Shards from Portsmouth NH sites usually have a variety of transfers, sometimes grouped around one theme, like floral patterns, probably reflecting personal taste or fashion. If you broke most of the cups but still had the teapot, you might replace them with a similar pattern. Also, consider the rapidly changing designs of transferware. A well-to-do household would not serve guests on outdated dinnerware, which would be consigned to the kitchen cupboard & replaced with a modern set for the dining room.
