Wild Rose tureen marked LINAN
Posted by Patrick Mikesell on June 28, 2011, 2:27 pm
I recently purchased at auction a sauce tureen in the Wild Rose pattern. The only marking on the bottom is a underglaze blu LINAN in caps. Volume II of the Dictionary of Blue and White notes that LINAN appears impressed in small lower case letters on a small plate with chinoiserie pattern of the 1810-30 period and was reported printed in underglaze blue on a plate with the Grazing Rabbits pattern. Is anything new now known about the signigicance of LINAN? The pattern on the tureen lacks the central gothic tower building found on other Wild Rose pieces. It contains only 3 sheep rather than the 5 on many pieces. There are only 2 pilings in front of the left hand punt (as compared to 3 on some Wild Rose images).
