Re: Platter with resurrection scene
Dick, Many thanks, this is very exciting, also about the possibility that it was painted. I have examined the central a scene a bit closer and it seems to me that is a line engraving, but I am not familiar enough with painted pieces to really tell. Also note that the scene is cut off in the two bottom corners. I have quickly taken two close up pictures of central scene, which can be seen though the same link. I hope that helps for a closer examination. The first two images I took years ago with another digital camera, and one can see the difference.
My little theory that an old copper plate for printing on paper was used is possibly a bit far fetched. I will ask this friend of mine who is a dealer in old master prints if he thinks it is even possible. From what I remember, copper plates for printing on paper are thinner then the ones for pottery.
The front also shows 3 stilt marks which together form an irregular triangle in the well of the platter. The back shows 3 small triangles of stilt marks on the rim. Jaap
