Salop - old name/abbreviation for Shropshire the current county. Shrewsbery - currently Shrewsbury, is a town/city in Shropshire. Salop - I am told it is supposedly from Anglo-French origin, though I thought it was from the Roman. More research needed there.
The Local Government Act of 1972 named the county "Salop". John Kenyon, a county official, managed to get the county renamed to Shropshire in 1980. I do not know the background on the 1980 change.
That's part of the name derivation of the county, not the pottery as is being discussed in this thread.
Corrections welcomed from my UK friends on the Local Government Act of 1972 or any of the naming conventions used above.
