There are lots of primary sources - most in the UK a few are available through databases that require a subscription. Winterthur Museum Library has links to databases at the University of Delaware. You can look at a collection of English newspapers, at 18th century documents on line, ancestry sites etc. Books that claim to use primary sources - and which I think is true - are some of the early volumes like PWL Adams "History of the Adams Family", which has stories about all kinds of potters besides Adams. You can read between the lines about Enoch Wood in the Wood family of Burslem by Frank Falkner. John Ridgway's diary exists - at The Potteries Museum - it records a trip to America in 1822-23 and I have published extracts. Unfortunately I don't know of any Staffordshire newspapers or trade journals on line. Obituaries are good but often over generous. Let me know if you have any particular potters in mind and I will look at my records.
