Re: Tormeys/Royal Ancestor
Hi Michael - The link still works and I've had a look at it. I don't think we (Tormeys) can claim an direct descendance from Niall NaoiGaoilleach as he died around 450 AD. The first viking raid on Ireland was on Lambay Island in 795 ad and vikings didn't settle in Ireland until some 80 years later (See Medieval Ireland written by Michael Richter published 1988 page 35 & 107). It is of some interest that the SOuthern O'Neills - based at Tara were subsequent high kings (Ard Ri) of Ireland. The Tormey name comes from the westerly part of the Southern O'Neill lands (now counties Westmeath into Galway). Indeed my father was born in Athlone Co Westmeath As a curious and coincidental aside - the Hill of Tara which houses the remains of the old Royal castle is currently owned by a family called - Tormey!!!! I think we were a relatively small and unimportant sept which lived between Longford - Athlone and Mullingar in the West Midlands of Leinster. Best wishes - Phil Tormey
