Byes or wildcard both work fine. Our hosts do the best they can, and get nothing but complaints and whining for their efforts. Most of us know we need to win to get in the semis, byes and wildcards are an unexpected bonus from time to time.
: Gees can you make this any more confusing if a
: host don't like it don't do it every host
: should be using there best judgement as to
: who gets awarded byes if as admin of hosts
: you want to abolish it do so across the
: board with no exceptions

: For those who haven't played much in the
: couple months, Stew introduced the concept
: of awarding byes to those who didn't get
: seated at the cost of 1 wild seat per bye.
: It seems to be an idea some hosts like a lot
: as it's a way to ensure no player is totally
: left out. However, it seems to be up to the
: host whether or not to use them.
: As a player awarded a bye, you get no points
: for first round play, so the most points you
: can get for the night is 10 if you win both
: semis & finals.
: However, there is one thing to consider...
: since we went back to 1st round being
: winners & wilds (or byes) only, the top
: 2 finishers from the semis advance to the
: finals. There is a 50% chance of making
: finals as a bye.
: We have already seen some players show up
: late and demand a bye as though that was the
: intent. If players feel their best chance
: at getting more than 2 pts for the night is
: to show late and expect a bye seat where
: they have 50% chance of getting at least 4
: points instead of 33% (based on 8 advancing
: out of 24) or less, I can see how some
: players will strategically play these odds.
: If we are going to do byes, we should play
: the original format so that byes don't skew
: the odds. Under the original format where
: top 2 plus wilds advance to semis and
: winners only advance to finals, the odds of
: getting 4+ points for 1st round players is
: 50% or more and for byes entering in the
: semifinals it is 25%. There isn't that
: boost to better leaderboard results under
: the original format Mush created.
: Also, I know it was discussed that byes
: would ONLY be awarded to players who were
: there at the beginning. Late players would
: not be awarded byes, but it seems in
: creating byes some players are causing
: issues with it by arriving late and
: demanding they be awarded them just because
: they can be. We don't need the drama from
: this as we've all worked hard to rid the
: tourney of such nonsense.
: While I think wilds can be a trouble spot as
: players sometimes play for the wild and not
: the win, the use of byes has proven to be
: more of an issue. I will not use them when
: I host.
: I know some will not be convinced on either
: eliminating byes or in changing to the
: original top 2 & wilds to semis, winners
: only to finals rules let alone both as I
: would prefer. But if we do at least say you
: have to be there by 9pm ET in order to get a
: bye (if the host offers them) at least we
: can avoid players attempting to improve
: their odds of getting 4+ points on the
: leaderboard by abusing that.
: I doubt Melinda would have considered using
: byes in lieu of wilds, so there is that,
