I had to think on this one, as the practice has both good and bad results. However, I think the good points outweigh the negative side.
I have played twice when a table isn’t filled, feeling guilty to leave 3 players hanging, and it is a disaster (more of a disaster than usual…lol). I can’t keep on track with the lobby and concentrate, so it is unfair to players playing with me. Having the option of putting in a bye/or byes eliminates that situation, and gives the players without a full table the option to play.
I know I have had a couple of players quite appreciative of being able to play in the semis when a table isn’t full, and that is a good thing. It promotes a feeling of positivity, which I hope this league is all about.
I do understand Brian’s point of players coming in late to capture a “semi bye” with a greater percentage to win. I think my observation on this is it appears to be one or two. If, as a host I see this happening as a ploy to skip the first round on a consistent basis, I would probably not use the option. Most of the latecomers have lost track of time.
I do, however, find it quite amusing that players would use this strategy to garner points in a small hearts league on the net. There must be other things of greater importance, surely!!!!!
Another positive point, is sometimes it is useful to have a player wait for semis, as if someone poofs they can step into the first round.
When are we going to use Tourneyking? This would eliminate any choice the host has. I assume the programme would seat players checked in and start without any host input.
