Brian worked hard to open discussion for members and put up concise threads for voting on how Tops might continue on a different path. Iím not sure how many voted, but not many posted their feelings or thoughts when the process was in progress, but are now voicing opinions after the fact.
I certainly understand Brianís frustration as to no matter what format we use, the same players will play selfishly, or play out their anger in the room. No change of format will alter that type of personality, which is unfortunate. If one player on a table is not playing 1v3, it alters the game entirely, as there is no trust to set up for low for fear of being dumped on.
I used to play and host for Monkeyroyale, and their point distribution with the top 2 going on to next round was 3 points for winner, 2 for second and minus 1 point for 3rd and 4th. There was constant bickering about the top two going forward, and it became a dumpfest, which caused most of the good players to leave.
Two players in the last two nights have voiced their dismay at the type of play at the moment. Iím not sure they will return, which is very unfortunate.
When I play with players I can trust, the whole game is interesting and as well played as the cards dictateÖ..For example:
1. If low is to my left and I have the queen, I pass it along with backers to the across player. That is the position to get low.
2. I donít expect a 2 clubs to be passed to me in this position, as then I canít lead through low.
3. I certainly donít expect A spades in that position!!!!
4. If 4th has a lot of points, and I am 3rd, I will pass a moon if possible to get 4th back in the gameÖÖ.itís strategy!! But I have been hit by lightning for doing that, as some players feel you havenít covered. For me, that is the right play.
5. Sacrifice is often a necessity to keep the game in play if you are 2nd or 3rd.
Now we have played top 2 going forward in the first round for a couple of months, is it something we want to continue or not? I personally liked Brianís first format of one plus wilds going forward and the point system changed back as it was, with the deciding wilds the differential that Vic suggested.
I have also noticed, as a player and now a host, that the players that leave the room without thanking the host after they give up their time to run the tourney, are mainly the culprits of poor behaviour during games. This is probably my pet peeve, as a sense of entitlement is not a pleasant trait. Manners cost nothing!!!!
SoÖÖthe question isÖÖÖcan players assess their own behaviour and help the league rather than hurt it? If a few are hurting the league, how do we address it, so that we donít lose anymore pleasant people? I donít know the answer. Only the players can answer that, and hopefully will adjust their attitude or way of playing for the good of the game and the league.
I really appreciated Brian allowing some discussion and giving players some sense of ownership for the decision made through the voting system. Now the ball is in the hands of the players for this league to go on with decent attitudes and some thought as to how one plays the game.
