I was the one who pushed for the change you are now behind returning to, but from what I have seen, I am willing to admit that those changes did nothing to keep people from playing for 2nd but instead provided a lack of negative results for choosing to go out in 4th to ensure another player didn't win. Bottom line is that no scoring or advancement rule is going to change how people play.
That's why I am fully behind Mush's original design. We allow anyone to play here who wants to play regardless of skill level, as we should as long as they can get along with others (no name calling, throwing games, swearing, etc.). Because of this, I think it's fine to allow top 2 and wilds to advance and give the 10-7-4-1 points because the semi-finals are where low man play is rewarded, and good players will advance there the majority of time and take the lions share of leaderboard points. From the semifinals, the fact that winners only advance (7 tables or more) provides that incentive, and I find the classic rules better for that over top 2 advancing to the finals. I would rather have the semifinals be conducive to lowman and 1st round not as much rather than the other way around.
Key to the whole tournament is an environment that makes it an enjoyable place to play. The classic structure did that combined with the efforts of Mush, Sagi and others who cleaned out the elements that were bent on destroying that. If we could run the tourney the same way they did, it will be the TOP Tourney it was, and to a degree I see us slowly returning to that. It's up to our hosts and players to be on board with that vision to make it work.
Some people are playing who haven't played much since we originally went to 5-2-2-2 and we will lose them again if we go back to that as it encourages revenge hearts play.
That's my 2 cents.
: i say let's open the vote to go back to 5 2 2
