The Measure of the Man

I'll never forget the time Tim was backing up from a burnout and his clutch locked up and he shot backward through the crowd and wound up upside down, on top of another altered...with the engine running and nitro pouring out on the driver below. I ran up with a fire extinguisher praying for the engine to die down before the spilt nitro torched off. By the grace of God it did! The next weekend when Tim came to test and tune, I walked up to him, got in his face and broke him off a Texas size piece of my mind...and I mean I got pretty nasty about it. Tim graciously admitted that he had made a mistake and kindly thanked me for getting him out of the car safely and praised our whole crew for a job well done. He even offered to let me cackle his car during one of its warm ups. His response was so kind and reassuring that I wound up feeling like a complete ass. But everytime I saw him after that he was all smiles and would laughingly reassure me that his reverser was fixed. We would just laugh it off and get back to racing...just like nothing ever happened. It taught me a very valuable lesson about true power of maintaining a gracious demeanor...even in the face of conflict and trial. That's why he has been my hero ever since. Words cannot describe the sorrow I felt when I got the news. I broke down and cried like a baby in front of 7 thousand spectators. And I'm tearing up now just thinking about him.
