Each Unit is designated a certain number of Officers to fill positions with relief factor figured in. The problem that occurs is when the Unit has a number of Officers on FMLA, Vacation, Disciplinary, etc. Also, part of the problem is officers that want a day off and call in sick when they are not. (Yes, some will come in on a gurney if they could just because they are supposed to be at work.) This is what you have to look at in the overall picture. If you have someone in each Job Number on the payroll, the folks in Huntsville say you are fully staffed and do not need additional officers. (I did not say I agree with it, but it is what it is).
So, the root cause is sorry officers that will not come to work when they are perfectly able to do so. BTDT for over 30 years.
