Re: microwave gun
Posted by Bert Hickman on 3/24/2004, 8:27 am, in reply to "microwave gun" Ramesh, A microwave gun is simply a microwave source and an open waveguide which allows microwave radiation to escape in a rather wide "beam". Low power microwave devices are used in this fashion for radar guns. Some folks have claimed to make them using high power magnetrons taken from microwave ovens or by using surplus Klystrons or Magnetrons. Unfortunately, microwave radiation can easily reflect off objects and be redirected back toward you. You can't feel it until it has potentially done physical damage. Your eyes are especially vulnerable - they can become permanently damaged or destroyed by relatively small amounts of microwave energy, sort of like the way eggs turns white when they're cooked... :^( Personally, I leave my magnetron inside the microwave oven where the radiation can be safely contained. I do all my microwave experiments inside the oven chamber. And I always heed the warning: "Please do not look at open end of the waveguide with remaining good eye"... :^) Best regards, -- Bert --
