MOT cap diode blew - Why ?
Posted by Chris on 1/20/2004, 9:34 pm As i mentiond the parts were taken from a broken microwave. The microwave would turn on, but as soon as you entered a time and press start, the microwave would humm very loudly and nothing inside would get hot. This thing was from 1984 (litterally, an old Tappan) So i decided, time to have fun with it! So i am assuming that the problem was a faulty capacitor. I did a few test with the trusty voltmeter and i know the transformer is working (mental note = get a voltmeter that can handle high voltages, poor thing) Thanks for any input guys. I know this is a tesla message board and i apologize, but i couldn't find any other place to post and i noticed a few of you are using MOT for your coils.

Re: MOT cap diode blew - Why ?
Posted by Bert Hickman on 1/24/2004, 10:41 am, in reply to "MOT cap diode blew - Why ?" Hi Chris, The humming sound means that the MOT was pulling excessive current. The capacitor was originally shorted, and so is the HV rectifier (now)... :^) BTW, remember not to look at the magnetron with your remaining good eye. -- Bert --

You can parallel a batch of MOT caps (which are AC rated) or you can use a higher voltage DC film cap. For example, all of the following surplus places have reasonably priced HV filter caps: Good luck, and remember - HV caps can kill you in a heartbeat. ALWAYS remember to discharge them and NEVER play with the circuit while its energized. Best regards, -- Bert --
